What Does the Bible Say
About Homosexuality

©2004 by OAIM

Homosexuality is described in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

Leviticus 18:22 "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable."

Leviticus 20:13 "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable."

Romans 1:26-27 "Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

There is without doubt that homosexuality is to have sex with one of the same sex.

The reason for including homosexuality in the subject of sexuality is not to single out homosexuality and treat it as a greater sin than heterosexual sins. There is no doubt that homosexuality is considered not natural, and it is not natural for the reason that male and female were made for each other. It is for the same reason that bestiality is not natural.

God's grand design is the family unit that consists of one man and one woman for the purpose of reproduction. This is why any other act outside of the confines of marriage is condemned. (See the article on premarital sex.) God does not wink at heterosexual acts outside of the confines of marriage, and neither does He wink at sexual acts such as homosexuality and bestiality.

However, the acts of homosexuality and bestiality do appear to be specific sexual acts that the Bible does mention as God giving them over to their own lusts. The reason is because they knew God yet they exchanged the truth for a lie "and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles." (Romans 1:23)

This appears to be directed towards those who knew the truth yet deliberately walked the other direction until their hearts became so cold towards the truth that God gave them the desire of their hearts. For these people, there is no hope. Their hearts will only grow harder and their acts will become more perverted as time progresses.

But if you are reading this article and are looking for answers and comfort, rest assured that you are not of this number mentioned above. The above-mentioned people would not waste their time in reading this article so there is great hope available for you. Please read on!

First a Word to the Heterosexual Reader

Although many preachers condemn the acts of homosexuality along with the person, this saddens me because Jesus died for the sins of the homosexual as well as the sins of the heterosexual. Unconfessed sin of the heterosexual will leads to destruction just as much as the unconfessed sin of the homosexual will lead to destruction. When I speak of confession of sin, I am not talking about the ongoing confession of sin that is a part of the sanctification process of the believer. What I am talking about is the confession of sin that leads to salvation.

The Bible clearly teaches that Jesus died for the sins of the entire world. (John 1:29) This included the sins of homosexuality.

There is a huge misconception that the confession of sin that leads to salvation for the homosexual is different from other sins. The misconception is that a homosexual must turn from homosexuality before the free gift of salvation is given. If this is true of the homosexual, then it has to be true of other sins. I need to choose my words very carefully because there will be those who will misread what is being said and twist what is being said.

For those of you who received Jesus as their Lord and Savior whose sins were not the sins of homosexuality, did you "clean up your act" before being given the free gift of salvation? If you are honest with yourself, you have to answer no. The reason you have to answer no is because if you could have "cleaned up your act" on your own, there was no purpose for the sacrifice of Christ.

If you answer yes to that question, then I suggest that you still need to be saved because you never saw the depth of your sins.

With this being said, let us take this thought one step further. After having received salvation, did you ever commit any of the sins that you were convicted of that drew you to salvation in Christ Jesus in the first place? Again, if you are perfectly honest with yourself, you will answer yes to that question.

If you answered no to that question, then I suggest again that you need to get saved.

If any reader wishes to think that the above statements are promoting sin, that reader either is totally without understanding or has never been saved and does not understand what the gift of salvation is. For those who understand what is being said, this is what I mean by some who treat the sins of homosexuality differently than other sins. There is not one set of rules for the heterosexual and a different set of rules for the homosexual for receiving the free gift of salvation.

I wish to make one more point then I will go on with the article. Just as there is no distinction between the rules to receive the free gift of salvation, there is not a different set of rules for the sanctification process. Just as the heterosexual did not and will not become sinless on their own, neither will the homosexual. The sanctification process is the working of the Holy Spirit in the individual and is out of the realm of other believers. As I heard a preacher once remark, believers are called to catch the fish and it is the Holy Spirit who cleans the fish.

For those who still do not understand what I have explained, then I suggest that you need to be convicted of your own sins and seek the free gift of salvation that is found in Christ Jesus. If the above writing has offended you and you are still without understanding, then what follows will offend you more.
For those who understand what has been written so far, you will understand the context of what follows and please take it in the spirit as it is intended.

Hope for the Homosexual

Let us include the words homosexual in these following verses and bring the sin of homosexuality down to a personal level for that person.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners (homosexuals), Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)

"For God so loved the world (homosexuals included) that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever (whoever includes homosexuals) believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world (homosexuals included), but to save the world (homosexuals included) through him. Whoever (homosexuals included) believes in him is not condemned, but whoever (homosexuals included) does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." (John 3:16-18)

"Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners (homosexuals included) --of whom I am the worst." (1 Timothy 1:15)

"The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you (the homosexual) confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you (the homosexual) will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." (Romans 10:8-10)

If you are a homosexual, I want you to know that God does love you and that He died for you so that you might have eternal life. Put aside all of the harsh words you have heard. Put aside all the words of hatred that have been vented towards you from misinformed and misguided professors of the Gospel (the good news) of Jesus Christ. Yes, God hates the sins of homosexuality but He loves you. God hates the sin because it is the sin that has caused you so much hurt and misery.

Put aside the fears that God is going to force you to become something that you do not want to become. God will make the changes in your life and the changes will come willingly. Put aside the hurts from the past that may have lead you into homosexual practices and come to the One who loves you with a perfect love, just as you are.

Put aside the lies you have been told. You were not born a homosexual. Confess the sin of homosexuality and let Jesus lift the heavy burdens from you and give you the peace that passes all understanding.

Jesus knows your hurts; He knows your past; He knows why you have done the things you have done. He did not come to condemn you. He came to die in your place so that He may give you the free gift of life. It is the Father's desire to give you the kingdom. It is the perfect unfailing love and acceptance of God that you have been seeking all of your life. He is knocking on the door of your heart and all you need to do is to invite Him in.

"If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:8-9)

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me." (Revelation 3:20)
